Machinist 2nd and 3rd Shifts

Summary Description:
Sets up, demonstrates, samples, and repairs/maintains a variety of metal and plastic machining equipment. Uses machining principles and knowledge of shop mathematics to cut, drill, bore, thread, grind, broach, mold, or mill, according to customer specifications. Designs, fabricates, and assembles specialized gauging, fixtures, and/or injection-mold tooling. Monitors operations to ensure the quality of parts being produced. Provides communication with different levels of the organization (Production Operators, Quality Inspectors,  Manufacturing Supervisors, salespersons, vendors, and other Machinists). Instructs and trains apprentices and operators. Participates in continuous improvement practices.

Essential functions and Responsibilities include the following (others may be assigned):
  • Fabricates specialized gages, tooling, dies, and/or staging fixtures per concepts and specifications. Required to transfer from one type of machine to another (such as lathes, horizontal/vertical mills, in-line/rotary transfers, broach, Swiss-turning, screw machine, CNC, plastic-molding, grinding) as situations demand to perform set-up, maintenance, and/or operation. Installs switches/sensors, tools, dies, guards, part-transfer, and other special tooling/fixtures in support of  jobs and processes. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining. Determines machining specifications to operate various manufacturing machines.
  • Recommends the purchase of tooling and/or inspection equipment. Computes construction specifications by applying knowledge of shop mathematics, product processes, and manufacturing equipment. Performs set-up and sample runs. Analyzes and /or trouble shoots conformance and processes to specifications and operating standards, making corrections as required. Studies drawings, routings and job reports for future quoting, improvement of poorly performing jobs, or continuous improvement of existing jobs. Reviews set-up of machine to ensure safe operation prior to production.
  • Documents set-up information for future use.
  • Verifies conformance of workpiece to specifications using fixed gages, micrometers, indicators, surface plates, optical comparators,  height gages, surface-finish instruments, calipers, and other measuring instruments. Positions and secures parts on surface plates with devices such as V-blocks, vices, and angle plates as required.
  • Provides guidance and on-the-job training to apprentices, machinists, and operators in the area of design, operation, and construction of tools, molds, fixtures and gages, using various types of machines and equipment.  Interprets and demonstrates the operation of manufacturing machines/processes, inspection methods, drawings, and inspection routings to operators, ensuring quality and production rates are achievable for the job.
  • Maintains, repairs, and/or modifies molds, tooling, and/or gauging per normal process maintenance. Monitors machine operation for malfunctions and notifies appropriate personnel when machine repairs or adjustments are required. May perform repairs and adjustments to correct malfunctions as required or at customer request.
  • May perform welding operations and/or heat treating when required.
  • Submits Continuous Improvement ideas.
  • Performs daily routine clean-up operations on machines in work area.
  • Attends production/performance review and team-based continuous  improvement meetings as required.
  • Collaborates on apprentice reviews when requested by Management.
  • Supports  ISO/TS-16949 efforts by compliance with quality policies and procedures. After proper training, conducts internal compliance audits when requested. 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 8,000 hours on-the-job machinist-related training or completion of a certified apprenticeship program.
  • Completion of  576 classroom hour at an Whitesell recognized training center or completion of a certified apprenticeship program.
  • Completion of a preemployment drug test with negative results.
